Cuisine

Let Argentario's agrarian roots shine through in dishes like acquacotta, a soulful soup of foraged wild greens, or a peposo beef stew, the meat meltingly tender from hours simmered in local wine. Taormina's ancient Greek roots emerge in pasta 'ncaciata, a timballo of maccheroni luxuriating in silky eggplant and salty ricotta salata. Malta is a crossroads of culinary influences: tuck into golden pastizzi, ricotta-stuffed pastries that fuse Sicilian and Arabic flavors, or a tangy ġbejna sheep's milk cheeselet, perfect with a glass of Meridiana Chardonnay, the grapes ripened in the island's fierce sun.

Historical References

From Argentario's 16th-century Spanish fortifications to Valletta's Baroque palaces, every port is a master class in Mediterranean history. Positano's candy-colored cascade of houses recalls the heyday of the Amalfi Maritime Republic, when its ships plied the spice routes to Byzantium. In L'Île-Rousse, visit the childhood home of Pasquale Paoli, the 18th-century Corsican patriot who briefly made the island an independent nation. And in Valletta, step into St John's Co-Cathedral, a kaleidoscope of gilt and marble where the Knights of Malta once prayed before sailing off to battle the Ottoman Turks.

To-do list icon

Things to Do

Hike Argentario's wild Tombolo di Feniglia, a six-kilometre strip of golden sand lapped by the cobalt Tyrrhenian. Take the twisting Amalfi Drive to Positano, stopping for granita al limone in lemon-scented Sorrento. Step back in time in Taormina's third-century BC Greek amphitheater, the smoldering peak of Mount Etna an omnipresent backdrop. And on Corsica's Balagne coast, trek the rugged Sentier des Douaniers, a former smugglers' trail hugging the island's jagged northern shore, punctuated by solitary pebble bays and wind-twisted pines.

Packing Guide

The Tuscan coast of Italy somehow remains a hidden gem. While offering the beautiful wines and food that Tuscany is synonymous with, here you also get a beachy vibe on a beautiful cone shaped island with lush green vegetation and olive groves. While exploring Porto Santo Stefano in Argentario you’ll want to hit that perfect mix of elevated and beach-worthy in Australian brand Sir dresses and Hermes sandals. For him, classic Ralph Lauren polos are perfect. Pack a beach bag by Marni to hit up the enchanting seasides of Valleta, Malta, Positano, and Taormina. Bring along Veda walking shoes for wandering the historic and bustling seaside town of L'lle-Rousse, in Corsica.
